The capital city of slow life in Wallonia
As the gateway to the Ardennes, Namur owes its status as a military stronghold of the utmost importance for twenty centuries to its position on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Meuse and the Sambre.
Situated on the Roman road linking it to Cologne, it also lay, from the beginning of our era, on the Meuse–Saône route, and from the 16th century onwards, it controlled ‘the Oise gap’ towards Paris – the route taken by German troops in 1940.
The town developed at the foot of the citadel, then along the banks of the Sambre and the Meuse. Today, set against a backdrop of greenery and rock, Namur is a serene and peaceful town where visitors receive the warmest of welcomes.
In addition to its churches, it has preserved some beautiful mansions and collections where art lovers can admire masterpieces that have been miraculously preserved.
